  • Student’s Pass (STP) 学生签证
    • How to apply: You must apply through the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). Your educational institution will typically provide you with the necessary documents and guidance.
    • Key documents: Offer of admission, passport details, recent photograph, and financial proof.
    • IPA Letter: The In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter is your temporary permit to enter Singapore. You must complete your formalities and collect your physical STP card after arrival.

    • Climate: Singapore is summer all year round! Pack light, breathable clothing (cotton, linen), an umbrella, and a reusable water bottle.
    • Essentials: Bring all your important documents (passport, IPA, offer letter), any prescription medication, and adapters for your electronics (Singapore uses Type G plugs).
    • Don’t worry: You can easily buy anything you forget here. Bedding, toiletries, and other daily necessities are affordable and widely available.

2. First Week Essentials 抵达第一周必做事项

  • Complete STP Formalities: Finalize your Student Pass at the ICA.
  • Get a Local SIM Card: Choose from providers like Singtel, StarHub, or M1 for affordable data plans. Pre-paid SIMs are available at the airport.
  • Open a Bank Account: Major banks like DBS, OCBC, and UOB offer student accounts. You’ll need your passport, STP, and proof of address.
  • Public Transport: Get an EZ-Link Card: This rechargeable card is your key to buses and MRT trains. You can buy and top it up at any MRT station.

3. Living in Singapore 生活指南

  • Cost of Living 生活成本
    • Budgeting: A rough monthly budget (excluding rent) can range from SGD 750 to SGD 1,200.
    • Meals: SGD 5-10 at hawker centres, SGD 10-20 at cafes, SGD 30+ at restaurants.
    • Transport: SGD 80-100 monthly for public transport.
  • Getting Around 出行交通
    • MRT & Buses: The fastest and most efficient way to explore the city. Use apps like CityMapper or Google Maps for perfect routes.
    • Taxis & Ride-Hailing: Comfortable but more expensive. Use Grab or Gojek (the local equivalents of Uber).
  • Food Haven 美食天堂
    • Hawker Centres: The heart of Singaporean food culture. Affordable, delicious, and social. Must-tries: Hainanese Chicken Rice, Laksa, Char Kway Teow.
    • Food Courts: Air-conditioned versions of hawker centres, found in most shopping malls.

4. Culture & Tips 文化与贴士

  • Language: English is the main language of business and instruction. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Mandarin or Malay; you’ll get by perfectly with English.
  • Laws & Etiquette: Singapore is known for its cleanliness and safety. Be aware of strict laws against littering, jaywalking, and chewing gum importation.
  • Tipping: Not customary. Most establishments include a 10% service charge.
  • Weather: Hot, humid, and rainy. Always carry an umbrella and stay hydrated!

  • Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available in most public areas under the “Wireless@SG” network.
  • Social Apps: WhatsApp is the most common for communication. Wechat is also widely used.
